supernatural lancashire12" library record - out now
Sam McLoughlin and Alison Cooper are the two talented imps responsible for this double header on Disposable Music - ‘Natural Lancashire’/‘Supernatural Lancashire’. Intended as a sort of "soundtrack" to the various cultural & traditional aspects of this vast Northern region, ‘Natural Lancashire’ consists of short-ish instrumental folk passages, both deeply evocative & charmingly melancholic. Like the incidental score to an imaginary, grainy documentary on life in the region, this lovely collection of twinkly miniatures encourages content thoughts of an idyllic nature. ‘Supernatural Lancashire’ is aimed more at the spook & ghoul fan, the kind of person who delves deeply into affairs of the supernatural, reads Fortean Times and is fascinated by dark crevices & creaky doors. An eerie, knee trembling journey with many class hauntological elements! Some utterly beautiful music on both sides of this record; two very different moods explored. Like the best "library" music, this has a transcendental, magical timeless quality to it. -A Norman Records recommendation (5th March 2010) - norman records
Finders Keepers have practically made an art form out of re-presenting essential bits of vintage wax. Their Disposable music series is the place where you'll find some of their most obscure discoveries, and this fifth and final installment is one of the very best. DiM005 is dedicated to 'Natural/Supernatural Lancashire', exploring both sides of this evocative, alluring and strangely darkside county that stretches from Windermere in the north, to Liverpool in the west and Manchester in the east. The first side covers a selection of tributes to 'Natural Lancashire', twelve tracks of sublime and florid sound signatures that remind of Edward Williams 'Life On Earth'. Turn over, however, and you're in the presence of some prime Wickerman-style arcane folk and occult entertainment, showing that very English underbelly of olde wayes ov life in Northern provinces, which only become magnified when considered with stories of pumas in Bolton, UFO's in Nelson and Burnley's still-healthy witchcraft scene. This is a terrifyingly good record and only limited to 500 copies for the world.- Album of the week - boomkat
